Program Details

Development Economics and Local Systems (DELoS), a new doctoral programme focusing on development economics and local development with an emphasis on an interdisciplinary and applied approach, is now inviting applications from qualified candidates for seven Ph.D. Scholarships. The program is jointly organized by the Department of Economics and Management and the Doctoral School of Social Sciences of the University of Trento, and by the Department of Economics and Management of the University of Florence. The Ph.D. Programme aims to develop the following knowledge and skills:

  • Research and training activities in applied economics both in academics and at firms level, systems of firms, public and private research centers, and international, national and non – governmental organizations
  • Impact analysis of policies and evaluation/management of programmes and projects

The Ph.D. Programme is organized in two curricula: Development Economics and Economics of Local Systems. Both curricula need a good knowledge of the economic and behavioral dynamics both in developed and developing economies.

The official languages of the doctoral programme are English and Italian. The language of instruction is English.

Scholarships are about 1,350 EUR net a month, with a possible 50% surplus for research stays abroad. The Ph.D. programme does not charge a tuition fee, but students are required to pay an annual administration fee of about €150. Doctoral scholars are provided with office space, IT equipment, conference, and summer school travel support. Trento University provides also help to find accommodation. 

Eligibility/ Requirements

Applications are invited from qualified graduates (Master’s degree or equivalent) in Economics or in a relevant subject area. Students need to have obtained their master degree by October 31, 2019. In this case, full documentation needs to be provided by early November 2019.

The programme is conducted in English and a very good working knowledge of that language, including proven writing ability, is required.
Admission is on a competitive basis and promotion to the following year is based on a satisfactory academic appraisal.

  • Photocopy of the applicant’s identity card or passport

  • Degree certificates: Italian “laurea specialistica” or “magistrale” or equivalent titles obtained abroad.

  • Curriculum vitae in English

  • Research proposal in English of about 3000 words, excluding bibliography and abstract, and an abstract of about 150 words. The research project is used for evaluation only and does not necessarily determine the final Ph.D. project

  • Maximum two reference letters (not mandatory)

  • a brief letter of motivation (not mandatory)
