Program Details

Chalmers University of Technology is a Swedish university located in Gothenburg that focuses on research and education in technology, natural science, architecture, maritime and other management areas. The Division for Science, Technology and Society focuses on the societal role of science and technology in the modern and contemporary world.  The division researches and teaches courses in history of technology, history of science, the social role of the engineer, gender and technology and sustainable development.

This postdoctoral position is a full-time temporary employment in a project that builds on ground-breaking gender research. It aims to understand the intersection of masculinities, technologies and energy. The research methods used will be interviews, document studies and participatory studies. The case study will research examples of construction of renewable energy technologies both in practise and through documents. Its practise-oriented study will follow renewable energy construction projects (such as for example EON’s microgrid in Simris) through field visits and interviews. The document study will analyse for example the journal Swedish Wind-power to explore which masculinities are as play within the energy sector.  The combined analysis of both field studies and document studies will focus on what masculinities are at play when renewable technologies are constructed in Sweden today as part of the national drive towards decarbonisation. Results will contribute to education materials for energy companies and global theory development in gender studies as well as open up more space for women in the energy sector.
