Program Details

Chalmers University of Technology conducts research and education in engineering sciences, architecture, technology-related mathematical sciences, natural and nautical sciences, working in close collaboration with industry and society. The postdoc position is located at the Chemical Engineering Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Department, the largest department at Chalmers with research ranging from the most fundamental level to a level close to application in industry and society. The research activities reach from DNA-research and biomaterials to high-temperature corrosion, catalysis and recycling.

The topic for this position is to produce alternative fuels using heterogeneous catalysis. One part of the position will focus on using lignin as a source for producing fuels by combining depolymerisation and hydrodeoxygenation. The other part of the position will focus on producing fuels using CO2 and H2 as feed-stocks. H2 will in the future probably be available in large quantities, e.g. through water splitting with renewable electricity, and CO2 can be captured from combustion processes. The research will involve the use of a combination of different experimental techniques regarding catalyst synthesis, characterization and activity evaluation. Experimental activity measurements will be carried out in laboratory scale using high-pressure reactors. Catalyst characterization techniques may include for example XRD, BET, TEM and XPS. In summary, the positions will involve planning, design and analysis of an experimental program that can generate the knowledge building required to enable efficient large-scale production of renewable fuels.

Eligibility/ Requirements

Candidates with PhD in heterogeneous catalysis are encouraged to apply. Experience in high-pressure hydrogenation experiments, as well as analysing complex liquid organic mixtures would be considered as strong merits.
