The Offer

The University of Vienna, a public university in Austria, is one of the largest universities in Europe and one of the oldest in the German-speaking world. The interdisciplinary research team (science and technology studies and life sciences) of the University seeks to fill the position of a University Assistant (prae doc) at the Research Platform Responsible Research and Innovation in Academic Practice as soon as possible.

The research platform investigates the meaning and role of responsibility towards society in research practices at universities. Besides the existing activities of the platform, the thematic focal points will be: handling of data (big data, open data) and related questions of societal responsibility, research integrity, as well as analyses of controversial debates at the interface of academic research and society.

The successful applicant is expected to:

  • conduct independent research within the profile of the research platform
  • write a PhD thesis within the thematic focal points of the research platform
  • successfully pass the public presentation (“fakultätsöffentliche Präsentation”) of PhD project within the first 12 months
  • develop innovative forms and formats of interdisciplinary collaboration with the life sciences
  • publish internationally, both individually and collectively
  • conceptualize and organize scientific events related to the platform topic
  • participate in the acquisition of internationally competitive funding
  • participate in the administrative processes of the platform

Eligibility/ Requirements

Applicants should have

  • Completed study within a social science field (Diploma-, Master-, or Magister-Degree) or in another research field & proof of meaningful qualification in Science and Technology studies
  • Ability to plan and conduct research on the level of a PhD
  • Very good knowledge of science and technology studies, regarding theoretical and methodological approaches (qualitative methods)
  • High ability and readiness to work in an interdisciplinary team
  • Excellent or very good proficiency in English is a must; excellent or very good proficiency in German is an advantage

Additional qualifications: ability to work in a team, organizing ability, reliability, high work motivation

  • Sketch of a potential Ph.D. project (1-2 pages)
  • Letter of Motivation (including a statement of the candidate’s understanding of interdisciplinary collaboration)
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Two selected papers or parts of larger publications (e.g. master thesis) as “proof of writing skills”
  • 2 letters of recommendation
  • Academic records
