Program Details

The University of Hanover, officially the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Universität Hannover, is a public university located in Hannover, Germany. Founded on May 2, 1831, it is one of the largest and oldest science and technology universities in Germany, and one of the nine leading institutes of technology in Germany.

The Master’s course in Metereology offered by the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics is meant to enable students to conduct their own scientific work. Prominent topics in research and teaching are the following: spectral measurement of solar radiation and its effect on human health, remote sensing of clouds, aerosols and trace gases both from the ground and from satellites, effect of weather on solar energy efficiency, local climate, dispersion of pollution, urban canopy layer, large eddy simulation of turbulent atmospheric flows to study the effects of turbulent flows in urban areas, the effects on wind power plants, and turbulent exchange processes between surface and atmosphere. Students are enabled to write computer code for scientific applications, partly on high-performance computers. Presentation of scientific topics and critical discussion of scientific results are crucial components of this program. The research phase and Master’s course will be completed by the submission of a Master’s thesis.

While the Bachelor’s studies provide a sound basis in the methods of atmospheric sciences, mathematics, and physics, the Master’s studies will enable students to do their own scientific work. In the first year, students attend lectures, perform outdoor and laboratory work, and learn in seminars. The latter will provide insight into the research topics of the three working groups of the Institute for Meteorology and Climatology. In the second year, the student chooses topics at the forefront of research and technology development.
