Program Details

IMT Lucca, founded in 2004 under the name IMT Institute for Advanced Studies, is a public research institution and a selective graduate school located in Lucca, Italy and part of the Superior Graduate Schools in Italy The acronym IMT stands for Institutions, Markets, Technologies. As an institute for advanced studies, IMT hosts researchers who carry out methodological research, held to high scientific standards, leading to the development of new knowledge. 

The IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca calls for applications for the Ph.D. Programs in Cognitive and Cultural Systems and in Systems Science

Highly motivated candidates from all disciplines are invited to apply for one of the 32 fully-funded scholarships, which are equally divided between two doctoral Programs that integrate scientific competences of economics, engineering, computer science, neuroscience and behavioral psychology, physics, applied mathematics, statistics, history, and sciences of cultural heritage.

Each of the two Ph.D. Programs has their own two field-specific Tracks, which partially share a common scientific background and are directly linked to the School’s four scientific and research macro-areas. Candidates can apply for one (or more) of the following Programs and Tracks:

Cognitive and Cultural Systems Ph.D. Program

Systems SciencePh.D. Program

Applicants must select the desired Track for which they wish to apply. Candidates can also apply to more than one Track; in this case, without changing the basic personal information, the “education” section can be varied in accordance with each Track.

Eligibility/ Requirements

Academic Requirements:

  • “Laurea Magistrale” or “Specialistica” (according to DM n° 509, of November 3, 1999), or a four- or five-year degree (according to the previous rules of the Italian higher education system) obtained in Italy;
  • Foreign degrees with a minimum duration equivalent to 4 years (full time). The 4-year duration should be considered a minimum but not sufficient requirement: the eligibility of degrees will be assessed by the Selection Committees.

Applicants who obtain their degree by no later than October 31st, 2019 can also apply. These candidates will be admitted to the selection procedure “with reserve” and must provide their degree certificate by the date of enrollment or they will be excluded from the program. Language Requirements:

Knowledge of English language: Applicants are required to indicate their level of English.

  • Copy of National Identity Card or Passport
  • Curriculum vitae et studiorum/resume
  • Education: for degrees obtained in Italy and/or in France, Ireland, Belgium, Denmark (Bruxelles Convention of May 25, 1987) and Germany (Italian-German Convention, ratified by the Law no. 176 of 1973): a self-declaration stating the possession of a degree, conferral date, issuing University and final grade; for degrees obtained in all other EU and non-EU countries: an official certificate that indicates the possession of a degree, conferral date, issuing University and final grade
  • Academic transcript/Diploma supplement
  • Research Statement
