Program Details

The “Interdisciplinary Center of Infection Biology and Immunity” (ZIBI) was founded in 2005 at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. It merges the activities of the Freie Universität, the Humboldt-Universität and non-university research institutes in the field of infection biology and immunity in Berlin, all working on a high scientific standard.

ZIBI aims to bridge the traditional division between individual disciplines, such as virology, bacteriology, parasitology, and immunology, and to provide a truly interdisciplinary framework for the Berlin-based researchers. The active members of ZIBI comprise biologists, medicals, veterinarians, biophysicists and other researchers from the disciplines of virology, bacteriology, parasitology, and immunology.

The research at ZIBI in infection and immunology extends from theoretical and experimental studies to clinical research and epidemiology and includes approaches ranging from analysis of single molecules to the study of populations. Since complex problems can only be solved by cooperation between basic and applied sciences ZIBI offers strong basic research that is complemented by translational and patient-based clinical research to identify new diagnostics and therapeutics. This unique combination of broad knowledge and in-depth expertise of the ZIBI community is the main strength that lays the foundation for high-level education and training.

The ZIBI Graduate School allows researchers to join forces regarding coordinated recruitment of excellent international graduates, organized of a common infrastructure and development of binding standards for thesis supervision and mentoring. The overall goal for the ZIBI Graduate School is to prepare students for a scientific career in infectious diseases and immunology. Cross-disciplinary educational experiences along with the interdisciplinary nature of infection biology and immunology research foster innovative thesis projects.

Eligibility/ Requirements

Applicants must hold a German Master (MSc), a German Diploma OR an equivalent international degree in biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics, chemistry, or other related subjects. It is NOT necessary to hold the degree at the time of the application, but you will need it a few weeks before you begin to work with ZIBI.

If you hold an MD, DVM or other related degrees that do not fall into this scheme, you will likely need extensive laboratory skills, epidemiological experience or bioinformatics knowledge in order for us to consider your application.
